Digital physiotherapy is a European story. Germany reimburses apps for back pain, knee and shoulder problems and rehabilitation after surgery. In the US, the authorised tools are mostly devices: a vibration belt for bone health and a brain-controlled hand rehabilitation system after stroke.

Below you find every musculoskeletal and rehab tool we track, grouped by what we could verify in the official registers.

In the US: FDA verified (4)

Authorised by the FDA (510(k), De Novo or PMA), newest decisions first.

In the EU: CE class IIa or higher (3)

Found in EUDAMED as class IIa or higher. We show whether a notified body certificate is visible there.

In Germany: DiGA (7)

Listed in the German directory of reimbursed digital health applications.

CE class I (self-declared) (2)

Self-declared by the maker, without review by a notified body. We list these apart.

Watchlist (1)

These products are presented as certified, by their maker or in earlier directories, but we found no matching record in the official register, or they are no longer supported by their maker. Some are registered and listed with the FDA as exempt devices, which is legal but is not a clearance.

The trap to avoid

Large digital physiotherapy brands are not always medical devices in every market. Check per country: a CE mark in Europe says nothing about the US, and a US service may hold no FDA status at all.

Questions

Is digital physiotherapy reimbursed in Germany?

Yes. The DiGA directory lists, among others, Kaia Rückenschmerzen and ViViRA for back pain, Mawendo, companion patella and companion shoulder, and eCovery.

Is there an FDA-authorised device for bone health?

Osteoboost, a vibration belt for people with low bone density, was authorised through the De Novo route in 2024.

Is Sword Health a certified medical device?

In our directory, Sword's Bloom and Thrive programmes carry CE class IIa in the EU. We found no FDA record for them.
